SEO Hamburg Meetup – about OnPage.org
Like every month, Anita Böhm and Florian Elbers organize their SEO meetings for online marketing rookies and experts. We’re starting 2017 with a specific tool: OnPage.org. The Munich-based company has established itself over the years as one of the essential tools for online marketers, along strong competitors such as SEMRUSH, Sistrix, or Ahrefs, among many others.
Big crowd at the Betahaus – the SEO topic is still going big this year! Celebrating their one-year anniversary, with hundreds of attendees, 11 sessions and 2 guest speakers, SEO HH is more popular than ever.
Although OnPage is an online software you pay for, you can try it out for free. The prices then range from €99.00 to over €1,500 per month. Are you on a budget? Start with the free version, it allows you to try out a fair amount of features. Furthermore, a huge amount of literature about SEO is made available for free and is well worth a look. OnPage.org understand the concept of content marketing and making great content available serves you as much as it serves them. So don’t feel bad about reading it through.
One module per aspect
You can start off with an overview of your website. Be aware that you will need to give OnPage up to a few days for them to crawl your site. Once this has been done, you can see a nice overview of your site’s SEO data: how many URLs were found, which pages are indexed or not, if you suffer from any duplicate content, etc. Thanks to this feature, you already get a clear idea of how well you perform SEO-wise in the eye of Google.
One of the guests, Axel Jack Metayer, who has solid experience in SEO and has toyed with OnPage for some time praises „the fact that you get weekly updates about relevant keywords missing to your site and that you should add them to your content.“
Once you’re ready to dive into the details, you can analyse specific URLs. OnPage will retrieve the biggest mistakes one given page contains and how to fix them. Very nifty feature for small websites, less usuable if you have a large content site not using templates.
„Keyword density is dead“
Another interesting module is WDF-IDF. It’s a great keyword tool. Seriously, I think the demo impressed me more than SEMRush, and so far it had been my favorite. I really would love to try this one out myself. Although „Keyword density is dead“ as Metayer warned during the presentation, it helps you brainstorm around a specific topic. Enter a word and OnPage will suggest related words you should/could add to your content inorder to rank better for this specific keyword. Tip: answer the 5 W questions (who, what, where, when, why) in your blog post/URL.
Meanwhile, the keyword control feature will display how your keywords are faring. Do they bring you traffic? Are they bringing more or less traffic over time? Who beats you for these keywords? Nice tool.
The sixth module, the navigator, also looked rather impressive with extra relevant information. It basically looks like a list of to-do’s, with the amount of time estimated for each task, how and why you do it. Simple, but very effective.
Finally, the monitoring module got less attention – it’s more technical and is there to check if your servers are sound, how your robot.txt are doing, etc. Classic, important, but not very sexy.
Although Anita was presenting on her own tonight (Florian could not make it), Axel brought in a lot of dynamics and useful input. The two made a great improvised tandem, with a lot of complementary information and insider tips about SEO. Thanks guys!
